Hey Everyone!
My name is Samantha Daley and I’m a senior at UCF with a major in Health Sciences in the Pre- Clinical Track and a minor in Women’s Studies. I’m originally from Ft. Lauderdale and I love it there! I’ve been a feminist even before I knew what it was, and I love to have debates on the topic with ANYONE that would like to discuss anything related to the topic.
What ultimately made me choose to take this class and why I’m interested in the global women’s movement is that I know little to nothing about the movement at all. I’m a blank slate when it comes to women in the Global East and I’m a big believer that knowledge is power so I want to make myself more knowledgeable. My future dream is to open up a clinic for Women and Children of all diverse backgrounds and religions, and I feel that this would help me be more knowledgeable about the situations and lives of women that are not from the west go through. I feel like there’s so much that I don’t know and would like to and I’m very excited for this class because I want to have my eyes opened, my ideas and opinions challenged, and I want to gain a clear understanding of what women of all walks of life go through.
Although I’m very excited to learn that all I can about the global women’s movement, I also note the difficulties I may face will be learning how women organize and the intricacies involved in that. I want to know how women go about setting themselves up so they could be a united front and really make a difference. I want to learn how these women form unions and what they are fighting for, I want to gain a closer connection to these women that I feel so connected and close to, but are so far way.
Right now I don’t do any global activism, but I am very anxious to learn more and get my feet wet and learn and hopefully immerse myself in the culture and interact with the women from the many nationalities and cultures worldwide and see their perspective on us women from the west as well as their opinions and ideas on the Global feminist movement in general. I think this would be an amazing opportunity to gain an understanding that I’ve never known before and I can’t wait to learn and absorb as much as I possibly can.
I have read, understood and agreed to the terms of the course syllabus and the blogging protocols.
Samantha,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the course and good to see you again. You should get to know Stefanie and Kira, they share your interests in maternal health. I suggest you three work together for something specific for our service project, linking to your interests in the medical sciences.
As for global women's and feminist movements, I doubt that you are a blank slate. We all come with preconceived notions, assumptions, and hopes of what other people are and what feminism might look like in other places. Try to clarify what you already think you know so that we can see how these ideas change, are reaffirmed, or grow over the course of the semester.
